Lighting, Thunder, and Belly Kicks | Oakland Maternity

California is known for a lot of things, but not tropical thunder storms. On the day of The Greene’s maternity session it became not only a historic day for them, but all of the bay area. The morning started with intense thunder, lighting, and tropical rain showers. It was insane and something we had never seen; nor were we prepared for. Unfortunately, before we could even walk into the park another random lighting and rain shower began. I was scared we would have to cancel our session but my mom-to-be was a huge trooper. We quickly planned to meet back up at sundown and try the session again. ( I regret not capturing them huddled under that tree trying to stay dry and neat.)

I am glad we did return!!! The day had completely done a 180; to a beautiful golden hour, and perfect weather. It was just what I had imagined for these newly parents. Flashes of golden light crossing their paths, under tall strong crisp trees, and of course lush dried grass to really bring together that Golden California feel. What I was most impressed about is that though they both repeatedly told me they weren’t picture people or “cheesy” smilers; their unique and stunning poses came through. Mama G has such a bold and determined face that gave me ‘Beyonce’s Black is King’ vibes. 

The thing about shooting with me; is that I do not believe in forcing any one look, feel, or specific style on my clients. Capturing lifestyle and life moments should be natural and unique to the individual. So the only one stepping out her “comfort zone” is myself. Which is something I love because it provides me with a new challenge to really learn and see my clients as they are and tell that story. 

The Greene family could not have picked a more unique day to capture their time together before officially becoming new parents. A unique couple amongst a unique California sky. Baby Jenise was preparing them for what was ahead; a little girl like no other.
